Coming off a much needed win against a division opponent the Eagles turn their focus to the 0-5 Buccaneers. The Eagles sit tied atop the NFC East with the Cowboys at 2-3 and by days end they could be in sole possession of first place. Michael Vick pulled a hamstring last week so Nick Foles will get the starting nod today. This will be a chance for Foles to prove if he should get another start next week versus the Cowboys or not. Foles did beat the Buccaneers last season in his only win in 6 games started.
The Buccaneers will be starting a rookie at quarterback. Mike Glennon was teammates with Eagles rookie safety Early Wolff at NC State. They average 3.6 yards per attempt rushing and Doug Martin averages 3.4 yards per carry on 100 attempts. The Eagles run defense has been much better this year as they average giving up 3.9 yards per rush attempt. Mike Glennon does not like to throw the ball deep and fit it into tight spaces so the Eagles may have their work cut out for them in this game.
The real challenge for the Eagles will be going up against the Bucs defense. They have a very good front seven in McCoy, Claiborn, Foster, Lavonte David and of course they have that revamped secondary consisting of Revis, Goldson, Barron and 2 round pick Johnathan Banks who has been cleared to play. Tampa Bay averages giving up 4.9 yards per play on defense which is good for 6th best in the NFL. They are however ranked 20th with averaging 20.2 first downs allowed per game but that is skewed a bit because of the deficiencies on offense this year that has lead to opponents getting about 31 minutes on offense per game.. They have a really good 3rd down conversion rate in only allowing 33.33 opponent 3rd down conversions.
- The key for the Eagles will be to continue their success vs the run this year. They can not allow Doug Martin to get going on the ground giving rookie Mike Glennon something to lean on.
- They need to get pressure on Glennon to get him rattled.
- They can not turn the ball over.
The Eagles should win this game but if they make mistakes in key situation ie inside the red-zone then it will be a close game and not a favorable outcome. I predict a 27- 23 win for the Eagles today.
