Well there isn’t really much to say about this one if you watched the game but if you didn’t then you definitely had a good day missing this one.
Vick go the start after missing the last two games with that hamstring strain and it was clear that he wasn’t healthy today. He passed on opportunities to keep the ball on some read options and when he was in the pocket with clear lanes to scramble he elected to stay in it. Once that became quite clear, Matt Barkley entered.
Barkley played better than he did versus the Cowboys last week where I though he was pressing too much trying to be a hero. Rookie mistakes were made this game. For example he lead the team down to the goaline on his first drive but instead of throwing the ball away he was hit, fumbled, and the Giants recovered. That took away any points before the half. One thing that is absolutely more clearer than ever is that the Eagles will be drafting a quarterback in the first round.
The Eagles struggles continued on the ground as the Giants limited McCoy to 48 yards rushing on 15 carries with a long rush of only 9 yards. There were a couple of runs where he should have just put his head down and gotten the one or two yards but for the most part the Giants had him contained. DeSean Jackson was targeted and they did try to get him involved in the game without using the deep ball. He finished with 8 catches for 63 yards. Most of those catches were on bubble screens with a long reception of 13 yards. The tight ends were targeted 8 times between Celek, Ertz, and Casey. They had 33 receiving yards on 4 catches.
In my opinion I don’t think they have what Chip needs to run an efficient offense with his playbook. One reason being they don’t have a QB who can get the job done which in this offense is the most critical part because he is making the 3+ reads on plays. Another reason being that they lost their number two receiver, Maclin, which greatly hinders this offense.
Once again we saw a defense do more than enough to win a game but the offense wasn’t able to capitalize. Grant it that it was against a Giants team but we have seen a defense showing a steady improvement each week. This is a good sign considering the switch to the 3-4 has a lot of players out of position who were primarily 4-3 scheme oriented headed into the season. They were able to hold the Giants to 5 field goals. They stuffed a struggling running game which is always good to see as they limited the Giants to only 88 rushing yards on 31 carries for an average of 2.8.
A terrible snap by the Giants long-snapper on a punt sailed over Giants punter Steve Weatherford and Najee Goode recovered it at the two yard line and walked into the end-zone for a touchdown.
Perhaps the most disturbing part of the game was Chip Kelly’s very questionable play calling. He elected to go for it on a 4th and 10 instead of kicking a 50 some yard field goal. Note that the kick would’ve been against the wind and kicker Henery has been very inconsistent this year. But later in the game Kelly chose to punt on a 4th and 5 when they were down and with time not on their side. He also called a pass on the goaline which resulted in a Barkley fumble that the Giants recovered. Manny though it’d be better if the Eagles would have just ran the ball with McCoy. I actually think that Barkley should have just thrown the ball away but that comes with the pains of a rookie quarterback. The last head scratcher was going for an onside kick with 4+ minutes to go in the game down by 8 instead of pinning the Giants somewhere inside the 30.
The good news of the day is the Cowboys lost in a thriller to the Detroit Lions so the Eagle remain just a game and a half out of first place in the NFC East.
Up next the Eagles play the Oakland Raiders. I don’t think the Eagles win that game for a couple of reasons. One being Terrelle Pryor’s play making ability and two being the Eagles offense falling on their face as of late. Unless some offensive adjustments are made I don’t think we can score more points than the Raiders unless our defense forces some short fields.
