Prospect Watch: Safety

There is no doubt the Eagles need to discuss the safety position this off-season.

There are three ways in which the Eagles could do this. One way would be by trade. However trades are rare so that scenario is unlikely as there isn’t a player worth trading for on the market right now.

The other option is through free agency. There are a couple of big named free agents set to hit the open market and the Eagles will certainly be one of the teams taking a hard look at who is available. You have names such as Jarius Byrd, T.J. Ward, Bernard Pollard, Cris Clemons, Taylor Mays, Donte Whitner, and Major Wright.

The last route of course is by way of the NFL draft. Here are some potential targets for the Eagles.

Calvin Pryor: Pryor has a physical presence on the field. He is fast and makes plays all over and probably has the most upside of any safety this year.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix: Dix is the top rated safety because he does everything well. He has good range and makes smart plays. He’s probably the safest pick of the safeties.

Dion Bailey: I am intrigued by Bailey because he was a linebacker at first while at USC but made the transition to safety. The move worked out well for him. He has the experience of being a linebacker so he knows how to play u in the box. He proved to be  solid in coverage which makes him all the more interesting.

Craig Loston: Loston looks to continue the recent run of solid defensive backs to come out of LSU. Loston is a thumper and plays with great energy.

Other players to look at are:

Deone Bucannon– Washington Sate
Jammie Ward– Northern Illinois
Ahmad Dixon– Baylor
Ed Reynolds– Stanford
